Excerpt from The Billionaire’s Runaway Curves:

At the end of her work day, Ellie left through one of the back doors of the hotel to walk to the nearby day care and pick up Riley before heading home. She hadn’t taken more than a few steps outside when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye and someone cleared their throat.

“Ellie.”

She swung toward the man who had come up beside her—the man who had haunted her fantasies for nearly nine years. A cold ball of lead formed in her stomach and she couldn’t think of anything to say.

He looked as good as ever–tall, dark and expensively handsome. His dark hair was neatly cut, his blue eyes framed by just a couple of new laugh lines. His full lips were pressed hard together.

Theo put his glove-covered hand on her cheek. “God, Ellie, where’ve you been all these years?” Before she could move, he swooped down and pressed his lips against hers.

Desire unfurled inside her. She curled her hands around his strong upper arms. Before she could do something foolish like pull him closer, she pushed him away. “No.”

Theo’s jaw tightened. “I’ve missed you.”

She still didn’t know what to say to him. She started down the path. “I don’t have time to talk.”

As soon as he started following her, she knew she couldn’t go to the day care right now. She had to get rid of him first. So she stopped and let him catch up to her.

“Still running away?” he said. “I saw you in the lobby. What on earth did I ever do to you to make you run from me like that?”

“It isn’t like that.”

“Then what’s it like?” When she didn’t answer right away, he said, “Why’d you leave, Ellie? I thought we had something good and then all of a sudden you’d disappeared. Do you have any idea how long I looked for you?”

Excerpt from The Billionaire’s Curvy Guide:

He didn’t answer for a long time. When she looked up, she found his gaze trained on her. “The stuff you gave me yesterday said you do guided tours. Personally.”

Damn it. Yes, she had been designated the guided tour girl. She loved the country around here and enjoyed showing it off to guests, no matter the season. Except him. Walking through the forest alone with him seemed like a very bad idea. “It’s a little cold for–”

“The brochure said all four seasons. Talked about how beautiful the mountains could be in the winter. I’m available this afternoon.”

Inwardly, she groaned.

“This is me being persuasive,” he said.

“No, this is you being hard to avoid.”

“Same difference. The more time you spend with me, the harder it will be to resist me. At least that’s my hope.”

His hope? Seeing this first chink in his armor, a little bit of doubt, somehow made him that much more attractive. Damn it.

Zoe pulled her calendar up on her computer. “I could do two to three.”

“I’ll take it. Although that’s a little short. Maybe we can do a second tour tomorrow for two to three hours.”

Heaven help her. “I’m not sure I can manage two whole hours tomorrow.”

“Three. Three hours.” He grabbed the edge of her laptop and pulled it toward him. “Let me take a look at your calendar and I’ll see how to fit it in.”

She yanked her computer toward her. “I can check my own calendar, thanks.”

A smile danced around his lips. “The more you fight this, the more I can see I’m getting under your skin.”

Like a bur. She didn’t say that, though. He was a guest. She had to keep reminding herself that or she’d say something totally out of line and then she’d regret it. “I’m just protective about my laptop. Most people are.”

“Ri-ight.”

He wasn’t going to give up on the tour. She knew it. She looked over her calendar. “The day after tomorrow I could do two hours together at lunchtime. But it’d be pretty hard to hike over lunch…”

“I’ll get them to make us a picnic.”

She’d totally walked into that one. “It’s a little cold for a picnic.”

“Surely you can think of some cabin or shack or something where we can sit down for a few minutes and eat?”

She could, but she didn’t want to. The two of them, alone in an enclosed space? Recipe for disaster. “I’ll think about it.” Yeah, she’d think about how to avoid it at all costs. “Eating while on the move might work better. We’ll get cold quickly if we stop.”

“I imagine we can find ways to keep warm.”

“Mr. Marks!”

“Bastian.”

Damn it. Why couldn’t she keep control of the situation with him?

“Bastian. Say it, Zoe.”

She added the two guided tours to her calendar. “Besides the lift tickets and the tours, was there anything else you needed?”

“Yes.” His voice sounded like a low growl.

She couldn’t help but look up at him and immediately wished she hadn’t. His gaze bored right through her.

“I want you to say my name.”

Zoe sucked in her breath. Was this some kind of game? Or maybe a test? And how could she back out of this without playing?

She’d just have to ignore him. “Do you expect to ski every day? I can arrange a week-long pass for you.”

“Ignoring me isn’t going to work.”

“It’s working so far,” she said under her breath.

“Think again.”

“Week-long pass–yes? No?”

He waited several long seconds and then said, “Yes.”

“Good.” She typed up the order as quickly as she could. “Anything else?”

“I still need to know your favorite restaurant in town.”

“You never give up.”

The Reluctant Billionaire Excerpt

“What did he do to you to make it too painful to see him?” Rhys said.

Her eyes filled with tears. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

She’d made it to the opening in the treehouse floor when Rhys grabbed her arm.

“Tell me. Please. Because right now I’m imagining awful things.”

The truth was pretty bad, although who knew what he was thinking. She didn’t want to talk about it though.

“Please,” Rhys said.

Sophie gazed at the tree, trying to forget that Rhys was behind her. “He told me he loved me, and that we’d get married. I was a fool, and I believed him, so when we slept together I didn’t always make him use protection.” Make that never. She’d never insisted. She’d been stupid blind with love for him. “When I got pregnant, he gave me a stack of bills so I could get an abortion.”

She paused. “I told him I didn’t want an abortion and that I didn’t see the point, since we were going to get married. That’s when he laughed at me and told me it had all been a lie to get me into bed.” She’d been so gullible. What had made her think a rich, good-looking man would marry a round-in-the-middle cook?

Rhys squeezed her arm, just a little. “And the baby?”

“Miscarriage.” She spat the word out, trying not to think about what it meant. “I’m sure he was happy. Took me a while to get myself together again. Then I found this job, and here I am.”

Rhys put his arms around her from behind and hugged her. “That’s terrible.”

She put her hand on one of the arms around her. She’d gotten plenty of hugs from her family when she’d lost the baby. Somehow, this felt different. Maybe because Stanford hadn’t once consoled her. And now this man who hadn’t even known her then was giving her what she’d needed all along.

Sophie leaned her head back and rested it against his chest. “It’s over. But sometimes I still think about my little baby. I wonder if it would’ve been a boy or a girl, and what it might have grown up to do. And I wonder if I would have lost it if he’d kept his promises.” She’d never know. But she’d always wondered if the stress of losing him had somehow hurt the baby.

Rhys squeezed her tighter. They sat like that for a while. Then he loosened his arms and said, “Let’s get back.” He helped her find the wooden slats so she didn’t fall climbing out of the tree house. When they’d both reached the ground, he put his hand on her back and steered her down the path.

“Isn’t this away from the house?”

“We’re taking another route. There’s something I want to show you.”

They wound through the wooded area and emerged into the sun. More gardens and wild patches ranged for as far as she could see. “This is all Mr. Blackwell’s?”

“It is.”

“He must love the outdoors.”

Rhys didn’t say anything, just guided her down another path through shrubs and flower beds bursting with reds and pinks and purples. They seemed to be edging back toward the house, though she couldn’t see it through the trees.

“Here we are,” Rhys said.

They stepped into a small clearing still wild with clover and pretty little wild flowers scattered through the grass. As they stepped closer, she could see the ring of stones and the unhurried flight of ten…no, twenty, maybe even thirty…different butterflies.

“It’s beautiful,” she said.

“I built it thinking someday my kids could come here and play. These flowers are designed to attract butterflies, and we’ve done other things as well to make this a sort of butterfly refuge.”

She took a few steps closer. Butterflies flew all around her.

“I would think, wherever your little baby went, it might be something like this.”

Sophie blinked back tears. She’d often wondered about where her child had gone. “Thank you.”

Rhys put his arms around her again and kissed the top of her head. They stood like that for a while and eventually, a butterfly landed on one of Rhys’ arms. It flapped its wings lazily not far from Sophie’s face.

She’d never been anyplace that felt so peaceful. This is exactly where she’d have wanted her child to have gone.

Sophie rubbed her cheek against Rhys’ arm. “Thank you,” she said again.

Quietly, without talking about it, they disentangled themselves and left the butterflies. Rhys took her down a different path that led back into the forest.

“You can go there anytime,” he said at length.

“I think I will.”

He walked her all the way to the kitchen door before wandering back into the garden. She still thought she needed to avoid a relationship with him. But was she making a big mistake in pushing him away?

Excerpt:

It seemed like hours passed. Zarik and Kessa put vids on for the children and tried not to fidget. Then the door opened to reveal two guards.

“We’re supposed to take you to the captain,” one said.

Zarik hurriedly followed them.

When the guards brought Zarik onto the bridge, he felt overwhelmed with the size. It dwarfed the bridge of the DLS Vize. Directly ahead of the door he’d been brought through, a ramp wound down to a lower area where roughly fifteen crew members sat before screens filled with blinking lights. All of them wore purple implants beneath their left ear that pulsed as their brains interfaced directly with the ship’s computer.

The guards led him to the side, up another ramp that led onto a large foredeck. The captain’s chair sat empty near the middle in front of a wall of screens. Along the sides of the ramp, an additional twenty crew members—ten on each side—sat in front of screens. As they walked by, Zarik saw three dimensions. Holographic images floated in front of a physical screen behind them. The crew manipulated the images and screen with both their brains and hands, plucking at the lighted holograms like a child might pull at the wings of a butterfly.

The bridge was so big he almost didn’t see the tiny woman on the foredeck. Her crisp uniform attempted to hide her female curves. That was the idea, of course. Rindarins were supposed to be androgynous. That’s why she’d pulled her dark hair into a tight ponytail that hung down her back.

The guards stopped next to the woman and she finally turned to look at them. Her deep brown eyes nearly filled her face but he didn’t miss the firm jaw and steady gaze. If he’d been anyplace else, he’d be interested. As it was, it was a damn shame such an attractive woman was wasted as a Rindarin.

“The prisoner, ma’am,” said one guard.

“I’m Captain Nadrin,” she said. “You wanted to speak with me?”

“Yes. I’m Zarik of Thallor, and I’m in charge of the refugees on the Vize.”

“I’m aware of who you are.”

He had decided to start off with a more conciliatory tone, rather than accusing her. “Your ensign indicated you’re concerned about combatants being smuggled on our ship. What can we do to assure you that everyone on board is a refugee, so you’ll let us go on our way?”

“My orders are to deliver all of you to a refugee camp, so it shouldn’t matter one way or the other.”

Zarik stiffened. “An Alliance refugee camp.”

“Yes.”

He fought to keep his voice steady. “Do you know what happens in those camps? Have you ever been to one? Pirates attack as soon as the Alliance ships leave. They kill the men, rape the women, and force the children into their crews. You can’t send my people there.”

Something crossed her face—revulsion, horror, scorn. He wasn’t sure which. She yanked at the bottom of her jacket. “The Alliance wouldn’t do that.”

“You already have. I’ve seen it. Have you no compassion? No conscience? The people on this ship are all refugees. No combatants. By the Concord the Alliance agreed to, you have no right to detain us, much less force us to go to one of your internment camps.” He leaned forward. “No right to sentence us to torture and death.”

“Sentence you to torture and death? As though you haven’t done the same to my people?”

“Not to civilians!”

Now she did sneer. “I know the lie in your words.” She motioned to his guards. “Take him back to his ship.”

“Captain,” he said as they pulled him away. “Captain, please. Have mercy.”

***

“Mercy?” A flush of anger swept through Alara. Did the Dathars show mercy when her mother died in that refugee camp? No. So why should she? She stalked toward him. “This is war. Sending you to a sanctioned refugee camp instead of allowing you to take your smuggled combatants wherever the hell you please is prudence.” She made a slashing motion with her hand. “Get him off my bridge.”

“You’re killing us,” Zarik said. “There are children and babies on that ship. You’re killing them.”

She held herself still. Babies? If what he said about the camps were true, babies wouldn’t last long. And why would any combatant take a baby with them?

It didn’t matter. She had her orders. The guards pulled Zarik away as she turned back to her work. The closest camp would cost them two weeks of travel time. Two weeks of time while her ship sat on the sidelines.

She’d rather be fighting.

Damn that man. If he and his captain had been a little more circumspect, she never would have found them and wouldn’t be in this mess—losing time, questioning orders.
